Sanctuary is an interactive game that allows players to explore the relationships between religion/culture, race, and immigration. Based on research from religious studies, philosophy, sociology, and digital humanities, this text-based game asks participants to consider various perspectives related to immigrants and asylum-seekers. Though fictional, the narratives are reflective of the real circumstances facing immigrants in America. Rather than pushing a political agenda, immigration is presented as a unique challenge of negotiation in homes, religious institutions, schools, workplaces, etc. Playing as a character, you not only deal with cultural difference and logistical/legal issues but also with assumptions about what it means to be a person of faith in this region of the country.
